ICDL Africa visited Five ATCs which are under the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Rwanda (AIMS) project. The ATCs are in Rusizi, Gisagara, Kamonyi, Nyamasheke and Nyaruguru all located in West South Rwanda to have a walkthrough of the ICDL Automated Testing System in preparation of the training for the teachers that will start on 2nd to 16th December 2019. This comes after successful training of trainers who will be conducting the teacher training at the various AIMS Smart Hubs.
The first phase will have a total of 100 teachers 20 per school trained in eight ICDL Modules (Online Essentials, Computer Essentials, Word processing, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Online Collaboration, IT Security and ICT in education) selected based on the UNESCO ICT Framework for teachers. During the visit, ICDLAfrica joined a team from AIMS that was distributing computers to the schools’ smart labs. The labs are very well equipped and will provide a conducive environment for training.

Once the first batch of training is complete, another group of nine ATCs will start with the programme when teachers are through with the National Examination marking process. The aim is to have a school in each district in Rwanda as a base for training teachers. The plan is to start with fourteen schools in fourteen districts with a goal of having thirty-one schools in total spread across the thirty-one districts in the country. The project will reach more than 4000 teachers in Rwanda over a period of three years.
